Prince George County is located in the mid-Atlantic region on the East Coast. The average temperature in the city is 33 degrees Celsius (91 degrees Fahrenheit) in the summer and 5.5 degrees Celsius (42 degrees Fahrenheit) during the winter months. The four distinct seasons require a variety of clothing, including warm clothing for the winter. The dress code on campus is generally informal, and most students wear casual clothing to classes. However, students are advised to have clothing appropriate for any professional and special social functions that may arise.
We do recommend that you bring some cash with you until you are able to transfer funds from abroad.
It can be expensive to transport a lot of belongings. It is better to buy what you need in the U.S. If you do decide to send your belongings separately, your best options are by boat or by air. Be aware, shipping items by boat takes longer but is also half the cost of sending them by air. Allow eight weeks for items to arrive by boat or one to two weeks for items shipped by air.
Most international flights allow each student a maximum of two pieces of luggage weighing 50lbs (22kg) each (22kg x 2). Please make sure to write your name and U.S. address on the labels of your luggage and any carry-on items.
At the U.S. Port of Entry, an ICE department officer will review your documents, including passport, visa stamp, important letters, and the I-20. The visa eligibility document (I-20) will be processed by the ICE, with a page returned to you along with a card directing you on how to print the I-94. The entry date listed in item #5 of the I-20 is the last possible day to use this form for initial entry to the United States. There is probably no other person in the world you will get to know as well as your roommate. Even if you bond instantly, there may be moments when personalities clash. Remember: communication – both talking and listening – is the key to a great relationship.
It’s important to be efficient with the number of belongings you choose to bring and accumulate over your time at RBC. Anything you purchase for your living space must be removed at the end of each school year. RBC will not provide storage over the summer months. Sharing expenses with domestic students for some items is beneficial such as television, kitchen ware, and cleaning supplies with the request that the domestic students own the items after the school year ends.
RBC requires you to keep your living spaces clean. You will have routine room checks and can be fined if you are not following the housing rules for hygiene.
It’s important to establish open lines of communication with your roommate on your schedule and your sleep needs. Roommates need be considerate and respectful of each other. Should your schedule or needs vary from your roommates, consider creating a plan or rules regarding late nights and early mornings (using a flashlight, walking quietly, using the study hall, etc.).
All residence halls have quiet hours. Be respectful of others and abide by the residence life rules.
If conflicts arise, seek guidance from your Residence Assistant first, Residence Life Coordinator second, and finally the Director of Residential Life. But remember, not liking your roommate does not grant you a room change – this is college, and you will meet people from many different backgrounds.
All residential students are required to purchase the 100 meals, 14-week meal plan, or 19-week meal plan. You will be automatically registered and charged for the 14-week meal plan for your first term. You may notify learner mentor advisors if you want to make changes for your meal plan for future terms prior to the beginning of each term. On-campus housing also features a fully-equipped kitchen with a refrigerator, microwave, sink, stove, and oven in each apartment.
Healthcare in the U.S. is expensive. When you sign your I-20 and DS-2019 you are verifying that you will not be a financial burden to the U.S. government, to RBC, or to the State of Virginia. Therefore, health insurance is required for all international students and their families. You will be automatically enrolled in RBC’s health insurance plan upon paying your full fees and enrolling in classes.
International students should visit their healthcare provider prior to departure for the completion of the Certificate of Immunization form (PDF)
Please refer here for complete details about immunization requirements.
